How do you learn new vocabulary? How do you remember it?

Many students don't remember important vocabulary from their lessons.

Here are the 3 BEST WAYS to learn and remember new vocabulary.

Make a Mind Map

Here is an example of a MIND MAP. This one is for FRUIT. You can see I have used lots of different colours which helps students to remember words faster.
I have the main word in the centre of the paper. Then I have different categories - Red, Yellow, Orange and Green. There are also categories for Appearance (how it looks) and Taste.
This way the student can learn the names of fruits and some adjectives too. Grouping the words together helps you to remember them.

Every mind map will look different for every student. There is no CORRECT or INCORRECT way to do it, so just do it!

Use a Notebook

Buy a notebook or notepad to use ONLY for your new vocabulary. When you hear or learn a new word, write it in your book. You can draw a picture under the word to help you remember what it is or you can translate the word into your own language.

Remember - use this notebook only for your new English vocabulary. NOTHING ELSE. This book is going to be your new best friend. Keep it somewhere you will see it every day. Maybe in your bedroom or next to your couch.

Sticky Notes

Write 5 new words that you are learning on a sticky note. Put this note somewhere you will see it all of the time.
In your kitchen, in your bedroom or next to your computer. You will see these words many times throughout the day so you can learn them faster and not forget them. After 1 week, change the words for 5 new words!

It is also best to learn words that 'GO' together. In the picture you can see an example. There are 5 NEW WORDS for things in your kitchen. The picture is ON the FRIDGE so you will see the words every day.

And don't forget - if you want to improve your English vocabulary you HAVE to put energy and effort into it. The words won't jump into your head.
Make it your goal to learn 5 new words every week.
