Learning English online is fast becoming the most popular way to learn.
But how does it work? What do you need? How does the lesson look?
So I am an online teacher (most of the time)
I teach students English through Skype or other online platforms.
Most of my students love learning like this
What my students say:
I can study from home or even in a hotel when I am travelling
I don’t have to drive to a school to learn, which saves me a lot of time
I don’t have any good teachers where I live. Learning online gives me more opportunities
Many people I speak to don’t know how learning online works
They can’t imagine it
It seems strange (it’s not)
(It’s really easy)
What you need
A computer or mobile phone with front camera (but a computer or laptop is the best option and all of my current students use this)
A good internet connection
A quiet place where we can have the lesson without a lot of noise
What we use
Facetime (if you have an iPhone or Mac)
(Don’t worry about these yet)
How a typical lesson looks:
I am always online at least 10 minutes before the lesson starts. I send you a quick message to make sure you are ready.
We start the lesson and make sure the connection, sound and video are good.
We use the first 5 - 7 minutes to talk about any homework and to introduce the topic for the lesson.
Then we go into the main lesson.
I introduce the new grammar or vocabulary using a Power Point presentation or a specially made worksheet
All of the worksheets and materials are uploaded into the student’s special Google Drive folder
The student can do any exercises alone or with my help. I always prepare some questions for the student so they can use the new English they have learned in conversation.
I can correct any mistake the student makes by writing the wrong sentence in the chat box, and the student can look at it and see where they went wrong
Finally I give the student feedback on how the lesson was
I explain the homework for the student, which will be uploaded into the Google Drive folder.
We make a plan for the next lesson
We can cover any kind of topics during the lesson.
Family and friends
Food and drink
How to write business emails
How to book tickets for
How to order food in a restaurant
How to ask for directions
And a lot more
The lessons are always made specially for the individual student. So whatever you need, we can do!
(You don't get this in a typical school)
All of my students have access to me online, through email 24/7 with any questions from school or work. We can also check homework easily online between lessons
Who online lessons are GREAT for
Pre Intermediate and Intermediate learners
(You have studied English before. You can speak and understand a lot but you are not happy with your progress and still have problems with some parts of English)
Businessmen and women
(You have to speak English on the phone, face to face or on Skype for your job. Maybe you work for a large international company. Learning online will give you the skills to communicate in all different environments and you will be comfortable speaking into a camera or on the phone)
Who online lessons AREN'T good for
Some students just love face to face contact with teachers. They are used to it, it’s the ‘normal’ way to learn. That’s cool, online lessons probably aren’t very good for them.
Your internet connection has to be good. If the internet keeps stopping or the connection isn't very good then the lesson won’t be very successful.
(I spend a lot of money every month to make sure my internet is as fast and strong as possible, so we can have the best lessons possible)
The student has to be comfortable using a computer.
They will have to use Google Drive, Skype or Google Hangouts
They will have to know small things, like how to split the screen so you can see me on one screen, and the questions and worksheets on the other screen
If you are not comfortable using a computer then maybe online lessons aren’t for you
(But it’s really easy and I explain everything when we start)
I hope this has explained how online lessons work and answered the questions that people ask me every week
