Pronunciation , or how you speak and say words. Is it important for learners in 2017?
Answer - no. (For most learners)
Everybody speaks differently. If you get people from England, America, Australia and South Africa all together, they will all pronounce or say words differently.
And they are all English speaking countries!
There isn’t one way to speak that is CORRECT. In my view, if you just want to get better English and if people understand you then that’s great.
You should speak as clearly as possible.
As long as people are not confused when you speak then everything is good!
Of course you should know the basic sounds in English but don’t stress too much.
If you spend a long time worrying about pronunciation then you are wasting time when you could be learning some useful phrases or actually practicing your English!
And I HATE students wasting time.
Some people DO need to think about pronunciation
If you are going for a job interview for an International Company
They want you to be able to speak clearly and fluently
If you are taking a higher level English exam for example a Cambridge Exam
Pronunciation of certain words and phrases can get you a higher score
What you can do to improve or test yourself
Find somebody with the accent or pronunciation that you want to copy. Watch YouTube videos, listen carefully to the pronunciation and repeat to yourself.
Record yourself speaking or saying some basic phrases. Listen back to the recording and try to improve your pronunciation.
